I cannot believe that Metrotown is turning 40 years old this year. I remember being old enough to skytrain to Burnaby’s largest mall with my friends and spending hours roaming the halls. As a teenager, you don’t have access to much money, but you do time; therefore this became our hangout spot. As I grew and the businesses changed, Metrotown become my go-to for shopping as I found my style, needed a gift for a loved one, or wanted to treat myself. I also held one of my first jobs within the mall, went to my first movie at Silvercity, and am sure had a few dates in the food court.

I was there when Metropolis opened with Playdium, and would go down to play zombie shooting games with a friend. I then recall the space being transformed into a sporting good store with functional racetrack. I remember when Rainforest Café was all the buzz, and only being able to afford a smoothie to enjoy its interactive decor. I grew as it aged and I am happy to now be able to celebrate its landmark birthday at this VIP party today.
During the two-month celebration, BC’s biggest shopping centre will transform into a walk down memory lane, with interactive art installations, throwback displays, and community happenings.

At the centre of the celebration are experiential installations that encourage reflection and imagination. Highlights include an infinity room, where mirrored surfaces invite visitors to pause, reflect on the past, and take memorable photos.
There is an interactive message wall that invites shoppers to share memories. And digital screens showcasing snapshots of life at the MET and across Metro Vancouver over the past four decades.

Throughout the centre, spring décor harmonizes celebration and nostalgia. Hanging blossoms, mirrored disco balls, floral floor decals, and a LOVE installation in the Grand Court set the scene.
Visitors can also join special events throughout the celebration:
