In this post we were looking for a quick bite to eat, being hungry and still having to wait a couple of hours before our planned for dinner. Our aimless driving brought us to Davie Street, and that led us to Tom Sushi. I have never formally visited, but have heard good things, and tried a roll and some noodles from a take out order once. Really not enough to get a feel of the place.
They are a Korean take on Japanese style sushi, emphasizing on fresh ingredients.
There was a line at the door and we added our name to the list when we arrived. With a 30 minute wait we decided to walk the blocks to see if anything else could better take our attention and our money. The result, nothing. I was tempted, as I don’t like waiting for food when I am this hungry, but my guest on the other hand was fixed on his craving and wanted nothing else.
We eventually got our small narrow table in the fully packed space. We ordered and ate quick to be able to finish and move on to our real dinner plans. In hindsight this only made us too full to eat another whole meal after.

I wanted the Mango Flower roll as I like the combo of cream cheese and salmon in my sushi. This one also included avocado and cucumber. The menu promised me a “mango flower” on top so I was very disappointed to see a few slices of mango laid over the roll instead. I had the flavour and picture in mind and was disappointed by the whole as a result. As for the way it tasted, it was good, but not unlike sushi I have had else where. So far I wasn’t seeing all the hype.

My guest wanted the Momil Soba which is “Korean Style” Zaru Soba in Cold Soup. During this visit it was the tail end of summer and having cold noodles was a great way to get the flavours of the foods that you want without overheating over a boiling broth. I enjoyed the chew of the noodles, but found it a little plain as is.

I ended up eating it with an order of whole Soft Shell Crab. This was tasty, well seasoned and fried. It made for a fun snack to easily rip and pop into your mouth, and enjoyable as a main to the side of noodles above.

We also ordered the Chirashi Don to get our fix of fresh fish. I did appreciate the quality of each tender piece, over perfectly soft and slightly sticky rice. No complaints here.
In conclusion I enjoyed the meal alright, but would not make my way, all the way downtown for them. Better than most fusion sushi shops and a great option for the neighborhood, but nothing outstanding and distinctive to make the a destination.
