This would be my first time at Swangard Stadium for an actual sporting event. It is also my first time watching a professional women’s soccer match.
This is the Northern Super League, Canada’s new and first professional women’s soccer league. This is one of the first steps towards a community movement for women’s sports, and we would be witnessing history in the making here.
Vancouver’s home team is the Rise, they are one of the six founding clubs in the Northern Super League. And this long weekend they were facing up against the Montreal Roses.
I went in excited to see what the vibe of such an outdoor match would be like. The Rise experience went beyond the pitch with food trucks and activities, welcoming individuals, and a positive fan base. Naturally, there were sport chants and moments that got the crowd cheering together, but all of it supportive and wholesome.
We were at a regular season game, with
the playoffs just around the corner. And tonight we got to witnessing the Rise push to secure their spot. The Montreal Roses came into this match up as the 2nd ranked in the league, after Toronto’s first place team. However, after Vancouver’s recent win against Toronto, they now had the opportunity to nab second place from Montreal, should they win. And spoilers: they did.
For those looking to make a day of it, there are plenty of food trucks to grab a bite at. They are on rotation, to keep regulars guessing. We had some bbq from Yo Bones! and tacos from Tacofino tonight. Paired with alcoholic beverages like ciders, beer, and coolers. And ice cream in cone from Crema for dessert.
