Today we were near Central Park looking for a bite to eat before the soccer game. Admittedly there isn’t too much within walking vicinity, and I was not about to trek more than 2 blocks for something more enticing.
We decided on Michi, given that my guest has never been before. They are a causal Hong Kong style cafe, known for their stuffed wings. We would get one of each of them at $6.89 per wing. All minus their spicy crawfish that was $7.49. In the grand scheme of things 68 cents didn’t seem like much more to spend, but I already felt just under $7 a wing was a lot to pay when Wednesday wing deals are still a thing. Although in hindsight, given how they filled us, it did lessen the blow. Not an every day eat, but a fun treat.
Each wing eats like a meal, removed of its bones and stuffed with rice and vegetables for filling. So fried crispy, others saucy, but all more rice than chicken.
The original fried rice was a salty soy coupled with good amount of pepperiness. It played off the glaze of the classic Chinese style wing well.
The spicy fried rice was the same as above, but with a hot and spicy mayo drizzle and some hot sauce in the seasoning of the rice. This was not unbearable heat, but barely noticeable if I didn’t read the flavour from off of its flagged labels.
I liked the cheese corn with its sweet kernels and salty American cheese blanketed on top. It was a standout and comparably different from the others without rice.
My guest liked the sausage egg yolk and sticky rice the least, I liked it the most. It was basically like a zhong zi but inside out with meat wrapping rice. I liked the chewier texture of the rice and the umami of the egg yolk.
My guest liked the cumin lamb fried rice the most, given its bolder flavour and additional warm spice, plus the crispier skin of the chicken.
In comparison, the curry fried rice with crab stick was lighter and more coconut-y, this better matched the sweetness of the crab with its nice crispy edges.
I liked the idea and how they ate like a full meal, but I couldn’t help but think that I would have gotten more value from this if it was deconstructed into a chicken rice bowl. A nice novelty, but not my go to if looking for wings.
