Pier 7

Today I was at Pier 7 in North Vancouver to celebrate the birthday of my sagittarius friend. The month of December is all about getting together with friends and family, in the spirit of Christmas. Therefore, I am issuing this PSA to celebrate birthdays just the same. To not combine the two to one occasion, but to celebrate each with just as much gusto. My friend appreciated this gesture.

We strategically visited at 2pm for a late lunch and early dinner. To be able to see the city beyond the water, and enjoy the sun setting into darkness. This was best done on their heated patio, seated on the corner, at the furthest point, overlooking waves washing against rock.

With this locale, it only felt right to feast on seafood, and that we did. But first drinks, both of which came recommended by the staff.

The Kaiser Sour was as tropical and sweet as the glass looked in blue. Made with Sons of Vancouver blue curaçao, coconut rum, pineapple, lime, and egg white.

Whereas The Angelus was lot bolder and richer with Bearface Wilderness Series 02 whisky, lemon, peach bitters, and rosemary. I found it floral, starting like potpourri on the nose, with a perfumed end.

The manager TJ raved about the Pier 7 Poke Bowl so we thought to give it a try. For this you have a choice between ahi tuna or crispy tofu. We had the former and was impressed by how many cubes of tuna it came with, alongside avocado mousse, jasmine rice, chickpeas, cucumber, mango, avocado, purple cabbage slaw, and sesame ginger dressing. It was a nice lunch time option, but I found it bland; searching for a cream aioli or some tangy pickle to give it more life.

Not to mention we also had the Peppercorn Tuna Steak and liked our ahi tuna grilled in large slices more. With fingerling potatoes, peppers, kale, bourbon berry, and peppercorn sauce adding depth and flavour to the entirety of the plate. I would order this one again.

The Seaside Paella was the punchiest of our plates. A saffron tomato risotto, chorizo, squid, PEI mussels, tiger prawns, and cilantro. It was a generous mix of seafood, zesty and tangy with starchy and chewy soften rice. The bits of crisp and juicy onion added some freshness into the mix.

However, if you are going to be celebrating at Pier 7 it needs to be with their Signature Tower. Two tiers of fresh seafood and sides to pick through. And since everything is already served cold, on ice, there is no need to worry about the food losing its lustre. Therefore you can take your time speaking with your company, and nibbling your way through it all.

Citrus & herb lobster, dungeness crab, tuna poke, fresh premium oysters, marinated PEl mussels, tiger prawns, citrus scallop crudo, maple candied wild salmon, and smoked steelhead salmon. This was a stunning display for 2-3 people. It was all delicious quality seafood. I especially liked the miso scallop, and juicy jumbo prawns. I was less a fan of the smaller mussels dressed with herb and butter, as you needed a couple to get a meaningful bite.

And you can’t celebrate a birthday without cake, so we got two. The classic blueberry cheesecake came with a candle to blow out. This was exactly as expected.

Whereas the decadent chocolate lava cake was a little too melty and gooey to hold up a candle.
