Flyover Iceland

I did not know that Flyover had an Iceland edition, which is available for viewing in Vancouver. Apparently the entertainment chain has a location in Iceland, and the footage created for that showing is now available for viewing at this, their Canada Place location.

And truthfully this was the most stunning of all their cinematic spectacles I have seen to date. Don’t get me wrong, I love being Canadian and appreciate what Canada has to offer coast to coast, visually. However, there is just something so awe-inspiring about Iceland, especially as I knew little about the country coming into this, and honestly envisioned it mostly ice.

We came at an off-time and surprisingly found ourselves as the only two ticket holders for this show. This meant we got to sit where we wanted, take photos and videos freely, and talk or make noise during the movie to our delight. This was a true VIP experience and I now know the rush and delight that celebrities get when they buy out a whole theatre for a date.

With shows every 15 minutes, the Flyover operation is a well oiled machine, where one group leaves, the next enters with seat checks in between.

Like the Flyover Canada experience, Iceland starts with a cartoon introduction, but this one is narrated by a wise, elderly wizard woman who speak about the land before, with the mention of trolls.

As for the show itself, there is plenty of opportunities to tilt with the movement of the would-be plane we were strapped in to. At one point the speed and the trajectory gave us a moderate scream and scare. Which we then wanted more of it, and was disappointed that it never came.

The visuals were of Iceland’s dynamic terrain, often described as the “Land of Fire and Ice.” Defined by active volcanoes, massive glaciers, vast lava fields, and rugged fjords. The interior consists of uninhabitable highlands, while the coastline is marked by fjords and black sand beaches.

After the show, as always, you are escorted out into the gift shop, where you can shopping and spend or grab a bite at their cafe.

To tie in with the show, Flyover Canada’s in-house café: The Flying Whale has a specialty drink that you can order, to round out your experience. It ties in with the Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival, happening now until Valentine’s Day. This makes this combo of show and the matching drink a unique Valentine’s Day gift solution. When you can’t afford to bring them anywhere for the occasion, you can at least get away for 30 minutes here.

This is the Icelandic Molten Mocha, described as a tiramisu-flavoured white hot chocolate topped with a whipped-cream “volcano” and espresso drizzle. It is served with a mini ladyfinger cookie drizzled in espresso sauce.

The beverage was sweet like dessert. Fun enough to drink alone or share, but it did not land on the aforementioned flavour profile. Aside from the lady fingers and cream I did not get any notes of chocolate, coffee, or mocha to make this a tiramisu-inspired drink. Instead, it was overly sweet, heavy on the milk, like a cream caramel. The ladyfingers were fun add on, but sadly store bought from a bag, which made them uninspiring. Although this does keep the cost down, as one of the least expensive hot chocolate options out there. $8.50 a mug, whereas I have seen other hot chocolates at double this price.

In conclusion, for something a little different, look to Flyover for an immersive, cinematic experience followed by a cozy chocolate treat.
