Sushi Mori, 18 year anniversary

We are currently in the midst of cherry blossom season, but if you are looking to enjoy them all year round, then you can visit Sushi Mori Coquitlam for their constantly in bloom cherry blossoms, indoors.

A few trees flank a few of their wooden tables, and offers guests a picnic in the park vibe with this casual forest.

They have been open for 18 years and are currently celebrating that anniversary with a door crasher deal. From April 18th to May 3rd they are offering a 14 piece Anniversary Special for only $18. The set offers variety across tempura, sashimi, and a specialty roll.

The latter was the Wave Roll cut into eight pieces. At its core this was a California Roll with mayonnaise crab and avocado, topped with seared salmon, tobiko, and green onion. Not original, but a familiar and popular option.

The sashimi was one piece each: salmon, tuna, ama-ebi. Clean and simple, another safe and trusted order.

For tempura there was prawn, a slice of yam, and cheese. It didn’t come with a tempura dipping sauce, but it was easy enough to ask for a side of it. The block was more like a croquette, a brick of brie cheese coated in a coarse savoury breading. This I liked the most and found it the most exciting and unique element of this set.

When you spend over $30 on your dine-in visit, you will receive a $10 gift certificate to use towards for your next visit. So here are a few recommendations on how to get to $30 with your $18 set, and/or what do spend your $30 credit on.

To be honest their menu is extensive and hard to read through. There was so much to consider, written in tiny font and laminated with no photos to reference.

However, you don’t don’t often see Tako Wasabi on many fast food sushi shop menus, so I immediately gravitated towards it. I like the chewy texture of the chopped raw octopus marinated in wasabi sauce. The pungent and bold horseradish masks any musky odour of the cephalopod. Served with seaweed sheets that you use as a scoop or base, I just wish there was more to go around as I liked the contrast of texture it provides.

I also enjoyed the Soft Shell Crab and they have a whole one deep fried. I was impressed by how it stayed crispy and had so much flavour as is. The menu mentioned a sweet creamy sauce for dipping into, but none was provided. I would have liked this as a way to rejuvenate bites.

I also did a half order of Takoyaki, deep fried octopus balls. I enjoyed the soft melt chewy, but as always, wished the chunk of octopus at the centre of the ball was bigger and more substantial to sink my teeth into.

In short this is a great promotion, and a good enough reason to stop by for a meal if you are in the area.
