You and I Paint x Harbour Cruises

Paint & Wine by the Harbour — Dockside Experience

Today were we were enjoying a dry and sunny day on the water with You and I Paint.

Originating from Toronto, this is a luxury painting experience centred around the settings they host their classes in. Their goal is to immerse their guests within unique backdrops, to help in the creative process of this led painting experience.

I have been to their first and original Vancouver event held at North Vancouver’s Pipe Shop, a popular event venue on the North Shore. Therefore, I could not help but compare the two today. And sadly this did not hold up the same, as it has been almost a year since the inaugural event. Although, that could be because back then we were attending a media event with sponsors, and it was hosted by the owners and originators of the concept themselves. In hindsight, this may be the true experience, that you will get as a consumer.

Today we were gathered at Harbour Cruises by the water. We thought we would be painting on the deck, to be able to take in the ocean breeze and get an unobstructed view of the harbour water and the rest of the city as it unfolds past the horizon. However, the ship would remain docked and we would paint within its cabin, taking inspiration from the season and our surroundings through windows instead.

We were able to explore the boat and ascend to the deck to appreciate a bit of the imagined view above. Sadly, the boat was aged and not well maintained. Empty shells and bird debris on the top deck and scotch tape from the last event held on to the lowered ceilings, inside. It was less glamorous than I imagined, given the reputation of You and I Paint.

There was a long table set up on the wooden planked dance floor. This was arranged for 14 participants, all directed towards the instructor at the front. There was also a live violinist playing for the duration of the event.

Whereas my first experience had us using fresh and new paint brushes, I had to use the cup of provided water to wash as much of the previous painter’s paint off my tools, before I could begin. The aprons were also different. Instead of soft pink these were branded and in a soft ashy taupe. Instead of the Charcuterie box I remembered, we now had cups. Each smaller with a paired down assortment of meat, cheese, cracker, and fruit. This did prove easier to eat out of as we painted. As I do find it challenging and distracting to eat and paint simultaneously.

A little easier to enjoy is wine, the first glass is complimentary and available in white, red, or rose. You have the option to purchase additional pours by the glass, after it.

As for the workshop itself, our resident artist was talented, but a little on the quiet side. I found it hard to hear her, even with a microphone; and then she struggled to capture the attention room. Although she did come around to offer private positive feedback and encouragement, and everyone’s paintings did turn out to each of our satisfaction.

In conclusion, if looking for a unique activity, inside a boat, overlooking the harbour, while enjoying a glass of wine and a personal charcuterie cup; this might be your ticket. And with a would-be beautiful sunset setting, this is one of the most unique painting experiences You and I Paint offers in Vancouver.
