This week we were in the 2024 Mazda 3 GT AWD. What appears to be a base model sedan, comes with a little bit more panache.
The Mazda 3 is available in either a hatchback or a sedan model (like we had), with your choice between a two 2.5-litre or 4-cylinder engine. Once again we had the latter with the GT and it gave us a lot more get up and go. As with all other Mazdas, you get the fun to drive, speedy feel, with a “zoom zoom” appeal; while being confident that it will take you from point A to B daily, in safety and with ease.
On the exterior it didn’t stand out from any of the similarly designed Mazda sedans, especially in their popular cherry red hue, just minus its compact stance. The classic and sensible black brick patterned grill trimmed with chrome, bridging the head lights is eye catching on the roads.
Inside, the all leather interior, stylish trim, and Bose speakers give you a tease of premium driving from what essential feels like a base model vehicle.
The 2024 Mazda 3 comes with electronic seat adjustment only for the driver, whereas the passenger is looking at a push pump lever. The door swings open and does not feel as sturdy when pulling it closed behind you. And the sunroof is a nice to have, but there isn’t much window to look out of.
Although the rear view camera is decent, one the better I have seen on its predecessors. And I liked the 2024 Mazda 3 GT’s take on a minimalist dash, this modelled after many luxury vehicles. Little is more with both a smaller inset media menu and climate control centre; matching and more streamlined touch screen navigation screen above it.
The wide and solid centre console armrest was nice to have, especially when the top cushiony bit can slide back and forth to customize your arm at rest position. Within this compartment is a felt-lined compartment equipped with both usb and c-cable charging ports; and an SD card slot for Mazda’s navigation.
The utility continues on to the trunk with a discrete push button release, hidden under the protruding Mazda badge at the back. And a handle on the underside of the trunk lid to help drop down and shut it afterwards.
In a world of vehicle brands and model options the Mazda 3 is ideal for those looking for an affordable city vehicle, while still enjoying a quality drive and some modern conveniences.
