49th Parallel Café & Lucky’s Doughnuts, Lonsdale

The new, highly anticipated Parallel 49 location in North Vancouver is finally open. Its new home is on a prominent corner of the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood. As one of BC favourite, local, specialty coffee company and cafe, this is the brand’s 5th location nationally and first on the North Shore.

They have taken the home of a heritage building, incorporating the 1900’s hard ware store that use to live within, into their decor and theme. They have repurposed material to remind guests of that once was, and to help bring their modern displays and retail space to life.

As best taken from the press release: “To celebrate the opening, 49th Parallel has released a limited edition single origin filter roast called: ‘North Shore.’ This 100% Parainema variety lot is produced by Juan Evangelista on his farm in Honduras and roasted in small batches at 49th Parallel’s roastery in Vancouver, BC. The North Shore roast tastes of bright red fruit acidity balanced with a deep spice sweetness, giving the coffee a creamy, syrupy mouthfeel.”

And what is coffee without doughnuts? As with all the other locations, not only do they serve their own coffee, but exclusively offer Lucky’s doughnuts to accompany it with. So expect the trademark seafoam teal and orange colour combination to follow though here as well.

Their doughnut display is designed to capture your attention coming through the door. Their collection includes popular flavours like their peanut butter and jelly, pistachio ring, French crueller, and sprinkled. Each made fresh, in-house every morning with seasonal, locally sourced, high-quality ingredients.

And for the spring season they are now offering the following doughnuts. Introducing the cherry cheese Bismarck with a cheese cake cream filling, cherry glaze, a graham cracker crumble, and topped with an single amarena cherry.

The cherry old fashion came just in time for cherry blossom season. This isn’t their annual Sakura doughnut, but a great reminder of things to come with its glossy pink cherry glaze. A vanilla old fashioned ring dipped in a cherry glaze, and drizzled over with chocolate ganache; finished with gold flake for an extra indulgence.

The lemon meringue Bismarck is a brioche (a French bread with high egg and butter content for a rich and tender crumb.) filled with lemon curd and a toasted meringue topping.

The carrot cake Bismarck is a spiced carrot brioche with a cheesecake filling, topped with a white chocolate glaze and candied nuts.

The maple nut ring is a brioche ring dipped in a maple glaze, topped with candied nuts.

For those with vegan and gluten-free preferences, or dietary restrictions there is something for you too. Look to the seasonally inspired vegan cherry chocolate ring, and the vegan and gluten-free maple ring. Or select your favourite from their regular collection of vegan and gluten free doughnuts.

But hands down, the one not to be missed is the limited edition doughnut, very Vancouver centric: Mountain Highway doughnut. This is a limited edition doughnut created to celebrate the company’s newest home. This doughnut features a pastry made with the Parallel 49th’s new North Shore blend of coffee. And is topped with chocolate ganache, pecans, and a chocolate dipped snow covered marshmallow; to represent the local mountains.

If the number of people trying to come into this private launch event is any indication of things to come, they are in good hands in North Vancouver. Stop on by for your regular coffee and doughnut order, or grab one of their limited release items before they are gone. A great cafe addition to the North Vancouver neighbourhood.
