I am the type of person to gift something edible over everything else. Therefore, I make it my business to know good, local bakers specializing in small batch artisan products. And here that self-seeking knowledge has brought a box of Batt3r Cookies to my doorstep.
This is a box of six flavours that rotates weekly, dependent on the season, what is available as ingredients, and any timely inspirations. I thought it a good mix of familiar flavours as well as some creative hot takes. Presented in a clear plastic top box tied with a blue ribbon. This was definitely giftable and definitely ready to incite awe.
Be warned the frosting on the cookies are fragile and easy to smudge. This is a lesson I would learn trying to pick up one for photos and videography. Given how moist and soft each was they are definitely designed to be eaten fresh for the optimal experience. Easy to bend in half an even easier to bite into, and this was at room temperature.
It would have been nice to have a sheet explaining what is what, sort of like what you get in a box of chocolates. As is, I was unable to guess what each cookie’s intended flavour was and had to do my own research.
The Lavender London Fog was an Earl Grey tea based cookie coated in lavender sugar and topped with whipped lavender
mascarpone cream. This was cinnamon on the forefront with the cream adding additional moisture and sweetness.
The Pumpkin Spice Latte has a Pumpkin Spice base with pumpkin Puree. It is coated in spiced sugar, then topped with a Coffee mascarpone cream swirl. This was more muted, I didn’t get the expected warming spice of this popular fall flavour.
My favourite was the Honey Cornbread which had savoury notes amongst the sweet. This was exactly as expected, a cross between cornbread and a cookie with candied corn as an added treat. A soft buttery cornbread base with whipped honey butter, drizzled in honey, and sprinkled with Maldon sea salt.
The Almond Croissant was the crispiest of the batch. Still soft and chewy, but with nice crunch on the edges and from the nuts, to mimic a croissant. A vanilla cookie base with almond slices, and fragipane filling, topped with powdered sugar and extra fragipane.
Similarly the Cinnamon Bun was the cookie form of this popular bun. A soft vanilla cookie base with a gooey cinnamon centre, glazed with a vanilla cream cheese glaze.
I liked the freshness of the Strawberry Pocky, but this had a more a natural fruit flavour compared to the snack sticks. The cookie had a strawberry base with dried strawberry and white chocolate, topped with strawberry glaze.
Looking online at all the flavour options, I would like to try the Apple Fritter, Matcha Strawberry Cloud, and the Hojicha Haze in the future.
