Chinese Baozi Master

I was in Richmond’s Yaohan Centre on an errand, and seeing as I was already in the vicinity, decided to stop and have lunch at their food court.

I remembered visiting the mall on weekends with my parents. They liked the authentic Hong Kong style food that the vendors provided. I especially remember the Hainanese chicken being my father’s favourite, so wanted to relive that all now. However, I didn’t think to bring cash and was left with not many options. Apparently there is an ATM machine in the mall, but I was not able to find it.

The one stall that accepted debit was Chinese Baozi Master. It was also one of the more alluring stalls, being able to watch two of their staff stuff and roll buns for steaming. A view easily taken in thanks to their all plexi front.

The buns were so small that they could be mistaken for dumplings. Therefore I thought it necessary to ask what it was, as that is what I wanted. The teller looked at me like I asked a stupid question.

If ordering buns they ask that you make it a minimum of two. I went with the ones I saw them make live and two flavours I have never encountered before.

They are made fresh to order with a need to wait. Each piping hot, steam escaping as you rip it open. I recommed sipping the juices out of the bun to avoid would-be spills.

I found the Mutton bun gamey, but its inclusion of carrots and greens helpful to cut into the stronger and denser flavours.

This was not the Chinese style bbq pork I wanted or expected. Not sweet and fatty with a nice char, but juicy and soft like a meat loaf.

Out of the three I liked the Pork and green beans one the most. I am a fan of green beans and thought they were a nice accent to help change the taste and the texture.

In closing, this was an interesting try, but not enough to have me going back for more. I have my favourite steam buns in mind, and they are a lot larger.
