I am mid way through my counselling program and to celebrate, decided to throw a pizza party for my co-student counsellors and the faculty.
When looking for the perfect pizza spot (considering my self-professed caliber as a foodie), it couldn’t be a chain and had to impress. I looked to Pizzone Pizza, as they were located near the school, delivered, and have a very varied menu, unlike your regular chain pizza shops. Plus they also do split pizzas, meaning you can try more flavours and appease more appetites.
I asked around and the only dietary restrictions I had to watch out for was gluten-free, vegetarian, and no pork and alcohol. Thankfully with so many delicious sounding options it was not hard to meet all those requirements, while satisfying everyone’s tastes as well.
There was just the trouble of the delivery. The person dropping it off left their phone at the shop and had difficultly finding parking, therefore knowing which floor to drop it off at. This felt very unprepared. I ended having to wait at the lobby for my order and to deliver it myself the rest of the way.
We got four pizzas. One gluten-free, one vegetarian, one with meat, and one their best seller.
The gluten-free pizza was half Moroccan Lamb and half Beef Rossini. Our gluten-free classmates were happy to be able to participate in the pizza party.
The former was house cooked lamb roasted in aromatic spices, mozzarella, red onions, and baby spinach on a tomato base; topped with garlic, aïoli, and served with a lemon wedge on the side for zest. The lamb was tender and not at all gamey. The pizza ate heavy, dense with what read like an entree and was just as filling.
The latter was beef, mushroom and caramelized onion on a white sauce base; garnished with fresh parsley and basil; topped with buffalo mozzarella and truffle aïoli. I would have liked more fresh elements to this to better counter the richness of the beef and mushroom, and some acidity for balance.
For the meat option we had a split of Peri Peri Chicken and Wagyu Prawn. The former was slow cooked chicken, roasted red pepper, caramelized onion, mozzarella, green onions, and broccolini; drizzled all over with Peri-Peri sauce. This was slightly spicy with the creamy sauce, and it is where majority of the flavour came from. This along side, the distinct flavour of the roasted pepper and peppery green onions. I would have liked more of the Peri Peri sauce on the side to help keep things interesting.
The Wagyu Prawn was hardy like a full meal. Salty and tender shredded beef, sweet tomato in the sauce, and bold garlic from the shrimp. I just would have liked some acidity in a tangy dip or some honey chilli for depth. Wagyu beef, marinated tiger prawns, roasted red pepper, and green onions on a tomato base. Drizzled with a Dijon mustard and sprinkled over with cracked pepper and sea salt.
I was most impressed by our vegetarian split pizza. Half Vegetarian Supreme and half Florentine Ricotta. There were so many toppings and so much going on that you did not miss meat in either.
The Vegetarian Supreme was loaded on heavy with grilled eggplant, marinated artichokes, baby spinach, roasted red pepper, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, mozzarella, and bocconcini on a tomato base. Topped with pesto aïoli. The base was quick to go soggy from all of the above and the topping easy to topple. But there was no tiring of the taste, each bite something new and more filling that our meat options above. This too could have benefited from a creamy dipping sauce to keep interest from tip to crust.
The second vegetarian pizza was the Florentine Ricotta that reminded me of a Greek salad with kalamata olives, red onions, cherry tomatoes, spinach, ricotta, and feta on a white garlic sauce base. Finished off with cracked pepper and sea salt. The salty feta sang, making this my favourite of the bunch.
The Vietnamese Chilli Chicken was very original. The perfect harmony of sweet and salty, engulfed in a creamy texture with house cooked chicken, green onion, mozzarella, slaw, fresh cilantro, chili, and garlic aïoli on a hoisin sauce and sweet chilli tomato sauce base. It was certainly the most memorable and I could see why it is their best seller. This is one I would recommend for first timers new to their pizza shop.
In conclusion, everyone was impressed by the creative pizzas and thankful for the impromptu party. This was a great way to mark a radom Wednesday.
