Sushi Ville

This wasn’t our intended destination, we had plans of staying within our neighbourhood of Burnaby. However, it was later at night and last call had come and gone for many of the restaurants we considered. So we kept driving, and our little evening cruise eventually got us to Commercial Drive. Driving down the block, our options were basically whatever was open. And thus we concluded our search at Sushi Ville.

We didn’t think much walking in, your standard fusion sushi shop with a generous menu and plenty of options across 8 laminated pages. The decor was also pretty standard, all dark in browns and blacks. But what would later come to the table was a stand out.

We would begin with some warm sake and follow it up with some more. Having it heated makes it easier to sip, I also find it an enjoyable aperitif that way.

We ordered their Assorted Sashimi A platter and it came with a little show. Served on a raised wooden tray flanked by two plastic cups fluming with smoke from dry ice. The assortment included salmon, tuna, Ika (squid), tako (octopus) and hokkigai (surf clam). However they ran out of tuna so we doubled up on the salmon. Overall the collection felt chilled colder than usual for sashimi. The pieces cut larger than how much you’d want in your mouth at any given time. And the squid was especially hard and stringy.

I liked the visuals of the Pink Lady Roll which is a cream cheese, avocado, and crab roll; topped with smoked salmon, onion, and tobiko. Having a sushi roll that included raw onion was so unusual, yet it works. The creamy sweet mayo heightened the natural sweetness of the raw onion, while adding some freshness. I don’t typically like the texture of onion, but this one had me going back for more of its crispness. The roll eats soft and smooth, its flavours are delicate, which is where I imagine it got its name from.

Whereas the Pink Lady was gentle and light, the Volcano roll was slightly spicy and chalked full of bold flavours. It is a cucumber, avocado, and crab roll topped with scallop and shrimp. It was baked and served still warm, leaving the rice chewy and the sauces warm and gooey, much like within a rice bowl.

In summary this is a decent spot to stop at, later at night for decent sushi and plenty of variety on menu. Not my first choice, but not one I would avoid either. Overall, we found each roll good, but on the smaller size with little rice. Each bite doesn’t fill your mouth, leaving it feeling almost stingy-like. But having only ordered 4 menu items, more research will need to be done for a more conclusive result.
