Tonight we were gathered at Parq Casino’s D6 for the 9th Annual Herstory Gala. A woman proud and woman strong celebration of resilience, strength, and community in support of the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC). The event’s goal is to raise awareness and support funds dor the women they serve.
The night began with a reception that includes complimentary glasses of sparkling in welcome and wine at the bar. We were able to make it in for one of each, only to learn that after the event started the drinks would dry up and the rest of the evening would be a cash bar.
Truthfully such an occasion is best enjoyed with a drink in hand so we bought a bottle to continue the good times.
As the crowd filtered in and the room simmered, small bites were brought around. Shrimp tempura, crostini, and risotto balls to name a few.
We eagerly claimed seats to be able to view the stage and enjoy the evening’s entertainment.
The Gala aimed to raise $250,000, ensuring that the Drop-In Centres remain a safe, warm, and welcoming space where women can access the resources they need to make positive changes in their lives. Guests were invited to donate and participate in the silent and live auction with a money metre televised, counting the room down to the goal. $50k was raised at the live action alone.
The evening began with land acknowledgements and a territorial welcome with ceremonial druming and opening prayers. This was followed by inspirational speakers and a fashion show. An optimistic night for a good cause.
