This week we were sporting the Mazda CX-50 and I cannot tell you how much difference a little decorative detailing makes.
Truth be told we barely recalled the 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo from the original CX-50, but found this week’s daily driver a standout on its own.
First let’s discuss this unique paint job. Upon first gaze it reminded me a sporty mustang with a patch of matte black paint on the hood and matching streaks on either side. This was a great background for the printed labeling of the make and model in glossy contrast. A quick and easy way to acknowledge you were in the Meridian Edition.
The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Meridian version was designed to further the outdoor experience. It comes as a package deal that includes customizable options to best personalize the CX-50 to your active lifestyle. This includes exclusive 18-inch wheels, Falken all-terrain tires, and the possibility of a roof platform.
You felt the vehicle’s intention with its wider and sturdier build. And although we didn’t take it off roading, there was no hiding the difference and increase in stability the wheels and quality tires provided.
As for how it handles, it feels like you are behind a jeep or hummer, you definitely have to own the girth of the CX-50 Meridian behind the wheel. The turns feel tight as the car doesn’t lean or roll. The engine roars, more so in sport mode when you have your foot on the acceleration. And worth noting is that there is an off road mode as well.
Despite its rugged sensibilities it feels like you are in the cabin of a luxury vehicle thanks to all the modern conveniences it is equipped with. I almost expected a massaging chair function and found myself looking it.
The seat itself is hard and hollow. It is flattened at the back for a wider give, yet still hugs you firm on the sides, as a race car would. You get the full benefit of cooling and heating seats. Although the lumbar could use more fine tuning to help with extended drives to get out to your outdoorsy excursion.
I liked the panoramic sun roof, however when it came time to open it to get some cool air in, you realize this was but a crack of a gap.
The quality of the Bose branded speakers were a nice bell and whistle. Especially as when all the windows are up the road noise is minimized.
In conclusion the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a handsome and rugged vehicle, sure to give you a good time and a better ride. Out of the entire CX-50 line, this is our favourite and definitely worth all extra for the extra.
