Ann Marie’s Cafe

We were in Abbotsford for a mini staycation, in celebration of their annual Fall Food Festival: Taste of Abby. On our last day we stopped by Ann Marie’s Diner. My guest has been and vouched for its great review.

Modelled after a retro dinner with black and white checkered floors, red vinyl booths, and round corner tables with metal edges. It looked right out of a nostalgic movie, with its history told through photographs hung all across its walls.

We took a seat and my eyes immediately went to their stack of board games they made available for public play. We agreed to a round of Battleship as we waited.

The menu has all the expected breakfast favourites. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, and waffles. We would stick with what we knew when ordering.

As common with most diners you can expect milkshakes, but Ann Marie makes them boozy. The Peppermint Mudslide was one way to wake up with 1oz peppermint schnapps, 1oz Baileys, and 1oz Smirnoff Vodka mixed with their chocolate shake, finished with whipped cream. It was like having your morning hot chocolate for dessert.

For food we got their name sake Ann Marie’s Big Breakfast with two pieces of bacon, two sausages, two eggs, two slices of toast, hash browns and your choice of two pancakes or two slices of french toast. Given the doubling of everything, this was an easy way to share.

You also get your choice of hash browns between fried crispy cubes or pan fried and smashed nugget potatoes. We would get to try both between our two plates.

We substituted pancakes and toast for waffles, which is what they are known for. Fluffy and fun with real butter and maple syrup.

You also get your choice of eggs and toast with this. I went with my usual go to of sunny side and sourdough. As a whole this platter did not disappoint.

We also shared one of their many bennies. The BBQ Pulled Pork Benny was pulled pork on a toasted English muffin with two poached eggs and their hollandaise sauce. The eggs weren’t oozy, but gooey, not that it made a taste or textural difference. Saucy sweet pork to parallel the thickness of the sauce and yolk, all on top of a crunchy toasted base. It could have used some freshness through either arugula or caramelized onions. Instead I relied on the ketchup over the potatoes for acidity, and to help break bites apart.

In conclusion, Ann Marie’s is a great option for a classic breakfast in a retro diner setting. Another great spot to add to my list of recommendations when in downtown Abbotsford.
