Best Fortune, Dine Out Vancouver 2025

As Dine Out Vancouver’s 2025 run is coming to a close, a handful of restaurants are looking to extend their offerings. One such is Best Fortune in Richmond, who have decided to prolong their $20 lunch menu and their $28 dinner menu a week further, due to its popular reception. They are offering the following 3 course menu until February 23rd, so we headed down to take advantage of the savings.

At those prices this was a great way to discover this authentic Sichuan restaurant. Located in an outdoor strip mall of sorts, expect a search for or to have to pay for for parking.

Our visit coincided with lunch so we ordered from a smaller menu. However, I would recommend visiting during dinner service to be able to chose from more elaborate specialty dishes like their Green Peppercorn Sauerkraut Fish, Spicy Stir-fried Clams & Chicken, Chengdu Lamb Hotpot, Signature Seafood Hotpot, Mapo Beef Brisket, Sichuan Tomato Fish, and Sichuan Spicy Shrimp.

Whereas the lunch menu was a lot more abbreviated, less options and simplified mains for $8 less. The appetizers and desserts are the same for lunch or dinner. However, we were so full that we didn’t realize we walked away without trying the dessert. Nor did the staff stop to remind us.

The entire kitchen is managed by one chef, preparing each dish to order one by one so everything comes out hot.

Between the two of us we were able to try a few options. Both lunch and dinner menu gives you the appetizer option of Wood Ear Mushroom Salad or Garlic Cucumber Salad. For dinner you also get the choice of aSichuan Cold Noodles. We didn’t try it, but one serving accidentally came to our table so we took a photo.

All appetizer options are cold salads, heavy seasoned with minced garlic in a light ponzu-like jus, the textures is where differ. The cucumber was offered great moments of cleansing for the mains below. Whereas the wood ear gave you an enjoyable rubbery chew. Both helped to jump start the appetite and also served as a great side for the entrees to come.

In celebration of Chinese New Year Best Fortune is also offering wine pairings as an add on. They have partnered with award-winning Haywire Winery to offer wine pairing that enhance classic Sichuan flavours. Diners can elevate their meal with a glass of 2021 Haywire Switchback Pinot Gris or 2021 Haywire Pinot Noir for $10 a glass.

I found the 2021 Haywire Switchback Pinot Gris better suited to the cucumber and the 2021 Haywire Pinot Noir for the wood ear. Although overall, given the meatier undertones of the entrees I would recommend the red as the preferred pairing.

For mains our choices were Kung Pao Chicken, Mapo Tofu, One-Bowl Sichuan Boiled Fish, a vegan Specialty Eggplant Stir Fry, Mapo Tofu, Twice Cooked Pork, Sichuan Stir-fried Pork, Fish-flavoured Eggplant, Fish-flavoured Shredded Pork, and/or a Big Bowl of Beef Noodle.

We got the Sichuan Stir-fried Pork, indicative of Sichuan cuisine with its numbing peppercorn and chopped red chilies. What looks like a pool of spicy chilli oil is actually mild and is what gives this mix of thinly spiced pork pieces, crunchy lettuce, and wood ear mushroom stir fry its flavour. I highly suggest adding on a bowl of rice to have as a base to enjoy it with.

The Big Bowl Beef Noodle stands alone. Nothing like the Taiwanese beef noodle that I had in mind. This had a thinner bone broth with white pepper spice and warmth. It felt leaner, despite the chunks of fatty beef and the chewy homemade noodles that made all the difference.

For dessert it was their House Bingfen Pudding, but once again, we sadly missed out this. We were so preoccupied with all the savoury dishes and didn’t even finish it all. We packed up what was leftover over and exited without a second thought.

In closing this was a good way to discover a new Sichuan restaurant. We enjoyed our meal and appreciated how simple and of great quality everything was. We walked away feeling clean and light, good value for a good price.
