DALINA X Strange Fellows Brewing

With what feels like summer finally here, patio season is now on everyone’s mind. And what better way to enjoy a warm seat under the hot sun than with a cool drink in hand. So, to help get you there, Dalina has teamed up with this local East Vancouver brewing company to bring a happy hour promotion that serves a good cause.

From now until the end of summer every $6 tall boy can from Strange Fellows beer purchased at Dalina, will have one $1 of its cost donated to the Covenant House; a charitable organization helping youths living on the streets of Vancouver’s downtown Eastside.

Visible by way of their trademark blue jackets, the Covenant House serves those most vulnerable. Most recently they have been providing their customers with safe alternatives. Not supplying the narcotics per say, but clean and sanitary paraphernalia to do them with. as to not spread any transmittable diseases or covid. A life saving measure that has seen much success.

So if you are going to be out on a patio and are most likely enjoying a beer, make Dalina your pick to do good as you feel good.

Dalina is the first cafe under the Bosa Family umbrella (the property developers, not the ones in the foods and beverage industry). They wanted all of their development properties to have a cafe attached to it. To serve as a community space and a place to congregate. Although Dalina is more than that, as a specialty grocery store with hot beverages, small nibbles, and even giftable items and fresh florals.

The cafe is named after Lina, the family’s matriarch. And their specialty sandwiches done under the header of Roberto, her husband. With currently 2 locations under their belt, they are looking to expand and bring more to the future.

Roberto’s Big Sandwich plays tribute to Italian traditions: bold saucy flavours and large portions. All of their sandwiches are made in house using scratch-made sauces, dressings, and fillings. The secret lies in the bread that they use. In order to keep all the above mentioned goodness in, they are using banh mi baguettes. This allows the bread to stay crispy and chewy for longer. (Pictured are sample sized servings of the sandwiches)

If you have yet to try one of Roberto’s sandwiches, I suggest that you do. During happy hour from 3-6pm daily (all throughout summer), all Roberto’s Big Sandwiches will be on promotion for $4 off. Making this the perfect time and reason to grab one today. And if you are dining in, be sure to pair each with a cold can of Strange Fellows beer.

Today we would pair each of their 3 available sandwiches with the perfect beer. They are as follows, expertly selected by the brewery’s brewmaster, to enhance the flavours of both sandwich to beer.

First, we started with the Chicken Parm with Breaded Chicken, Marinara, and Cheese. Best when eaten fresh out of the oven, and the chicken is still crispy with its thick cakey breading, and the cheese comes out in melted gooey strands. Coat both with generous amount of tangy tomato sauce and sandwich between their elongated crunchy banh mi bread, and you have a recipe for success. A classic with all familiar flavours, and the lightest of the three sandwich offerings.

The suggested beer pairing for this is the Strange Fellows Pilsner described as a bright, crisp, and herbal beer.

The Godfather is the same as the above, but take out the chicken and load up on large house made meatballs instead. They are seasoned with plenty of spices, and come out with an herbaceous-ness that dominates. The difficulty in eating this, is the need to ration meat to tomato and bread for balance; not to mention the need to keep the balls from rolling out.

The perfect pairing for such a bold sandwich is the just as punchy IPA: a hazy, fruity, and aromatic beer from Strange Fellows.

The group’s favourite (including myself) is the Dagwood big sandwich. This is a fragrant handheld layered with Mortadella, Salami, Prosciutto, and Cheese. The most different compared to the other two. Here you get plenty of salty meats and fresh veggies with generous amounts of tangy acidic dressing to counter act the salty meat. It is the kind of sandwich you want to have a beer with.

And the best gets the best, everyone just as much liked Strange Fellow’s Talisman beer. A pale ale that is versatile with tropical notes that are hoppy.

So, to conclude, head to one the most popular patios in the area for some delicious beer and sandwich pairings that not only taste good, but do good. Available from now to the end of August.
