So this once tucked away spot for egg waffles in Richmond, now has a prominent Robson Street location in Vancouver. I visited the opening week and they were busy right when they opened at 1pm.
They are a small crew with a small space, so as a result there was a wait. However, everyone seems okay to stand in line for their waffles to be made to order.
There was one dedicated staff at the cash register, one making the waffles, and another in the back mixing the drinks. Each doing his part to speed up the process for their loyal and patiently waiting customers. When one was done at his post they all went to help flip waffles.
My order took 10 minutes, so be prepared to wait. Although that maybe in part to the giveaways they were doing on that day. I got a free toy baby chick and matching headband for following them online. This yellow bird is their mascot.
They also had cardboard fans shaped like waffles to give out. These were helpful in keeping customers cool in the hot space.
As for their waffles, I can see why these are so popular. They take the spongy cakey goodness of waffles and their childhood nostalgia, and to it add a fun texture that you can pop like a bubble wrap. Then they give customers the ability to customize theirs with a collection of sweet and savoury flavours to choose from. The result is a treat that is easy to eat, portable and on the go. A snack that can carry you in-between meals.
My go-to is always salted egg as I prefer them savoury. Although I do find, the flavour could be more pronounced, that there is not enough salted egg flavour. Therefore, having cheese in the mix as well helps to give me some of that. In the future I would also love to see them have a dip as an add on to dunk into.
Chocolate is a popular choice, but for more cocoa goodness get the double chocolate. This then becomes the overarching flavor, overpowering the custard-like original bubble waffle itself.
And only available at this location is the matcha mochi waffle. Their most time consuming stuffed egg waffle yet.
Their stuffed waffles in general ande quite labour-intensive, having to fill each individual waffle cup with a custom fillings like pork floss, Portuguese egg tart, or durian cream. However, this is even more so when you have to drop a single piece of mochi into the mix, that is a single dollop of pre-made, and pre-rounded mochi in every single bubble waffle dent. This is it, then all drizzled over with a brown sugar syrup, before getting its batter outer coating.
The result is a waffle I suggest eating right away for the optimal combined texture of cake and sticky gum. Not too sweet, I liked this one.
And new on the menu is a more traditional looking waffle, folded in half and pressed with a milky peanut-butter center. This one you must have hot and it is amazing! Although I may be bias as I love everything peanut butter related.
In closing, it is nice to have another option for these speciality egg waffles in the city.
