Today we stopped at the nearby Kurry Wala for a later lunch. I honestly find Indian restaurants a dime a dozen and hard to sort through. So instead of trying to pick out the chef’s specials or something they do a little differently at their location, we decided to just order our favourite dishes. Dishes we are familar with and know what to expect from, and then have them to compare to all the other Indian restaurants we have tried and will eventually try.
Today this included butter chicken, goat curry, pakoras because they didn’t have somosas, briyani for rice, mango lassi to drink, and of course their house made naan. Overall this was a flavourful meal and one we enjoyed, designating it a future restaurant we would order delivery from, should we crave Indian cuisine.
I find Mango Lassi a great palate refresher. Sips to take in between all the bold flavours. This take was more yogurt than tropical fruit, a little on the salty side and not too sweet.
We also tried the Aam Panna, which was described as a “refreshing raw mango drink”. It is like the watered down version of the syrup that you pour into golgappa. As a drink, its tangy and savoury with tamarind notes. It pairs with the food and also helps to wash it.
In truth I actually wanted their take on Indian masala chai, but it is only served until 3pm.
For food we started with their Veg Pakora, crispy fritters made with mixed veggies, spices, and herbs. The larger nuggests had a dense centre and the sauce contained all the flavour. However the smaller bites were the best with their extra crispy edges.
We were interested in their Lamb chops, the menu described it as “A trully melt in the mouth delicacy, very fine and delectable lamb chops”. However, we were disappointed that it was not available today.
And I don’t care how basic it makes me look, I cannot visit an Indian restaurant without ordering butter chicken. Their Smoked Butter Chicken is prepared in a tomato gravy enriched with butter, boiled egg, and cooked in a butter gravy. This was a lovely rendition. The right amount of sweet versus heat, smothering very tender meat. And to our delight it was all dark meat over the typically used white breast chicken.
Indian Style Goat Curry with tender pieces of mutton meat cooked with aromatic spices. This ate more like a stew, thick and hearty and not of the typical Indian spices. The meat was a tad tough, but that is indicative of goat.
We had it all with their Veg Biryani, which served like a fried rice base. A combination of garden fresh vegetable and basmati rice. Why get regular rice when you can get briyani? The second best platform for all the sauces above, after naan.
They had a Garlic and mint naan, a first time hearing this combination, but we didn’t taste any of the mint.
Once again, this was an approachable, easy, and uncomplicated meal that we would order again for delivery.
