Laura’s Coffee Corner

Today we were in Whiterock for the day, and when looking for a meal, walked to Laura’s Coffee Corner for lunch. Given the sat patio and the crowds indoors, this appears to be a popular, local hot spot.

Here, they serve all the expected cafe classics like cold and hot beverages, pastries and desserts, as well as some more fulsome plates that cover both breakfast and lunch.

We walked in and grabbed one of their larger share tables in the corner, under the light of their billboard-like sign.

We started with a couple of their drinks, coffees and lattes with foam art served hot. And their new matcha lattes with flavoured cream in both strawberry and lavender. Here, the cloud cream added a nice hint of colour, but you don’t get much of the promised flavour past the matcha, not that the matcha is all that potent itself.

For food we shared a few breakfast plates, as decided by the owner of the cafe. We started with the Mediterranean sandwich. This was basically avocado toast with thinly sliced pieces of avocado and two poached eggs. Where it differs is the addition of spinach leaves at the base, sliced cherry tomato halves, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar, and a sprinkle of feta cheese. Considering that there were no condiments on or in between the slices of whole grain bread, to bound and bring everything together as a sandwich, this felt more like a salad with a side of bread. But even then it was a little plain.

This was similar to their avocado breakfast platter, which we also had. This was described to us as their full set breakfast, but instead of any sausage or bacon, this is their vegetarian option with avocado as the feature. The same thinly sliced avocado above with the option to have it with your whole grain bread, this time two fried eggs instead of poached ones. Considering that the side of potato hash was unseasoned it would have been nice to have come with a side of ketchup or something to dip it into. This was a similar case with the plain toast. No butter, no spreads. All together this plate felt undone.

Out of all the breakfast options the Chorizo and potato hash with coloured peppers, onion, kale, and poached eggs had the most pop. The runny yolks gave the dry mix a sauce of sorts, and the potato were a great base for the sweet peppers and zesty sausage.

I prefer lunch over breakfast so enjoyed their triple decker Clubhouse sandwich on three layers of toasted white bread. All sandwiching ham and turkey cold cuts, crisp bacon shards, lettuce, and cheddar cheese. I didn’t taste any mayonnaise or mustard and could have used either or both for interest and as a binder.

The smoked salmon cream cheese bagel was also tasty and as expected. Fresh with the fish and herbs, this came across as a lighter option.

And if looking for something sweet, they also have waffles, this was topped to look like a cake with strawberries, ice cream, and syrup. The fruit and dessert toppings were nice, but the temperature of the ice cream chilled the waffle and made it cold and denser, where as I like my waffles warm and fluffy.

In short, the spot is lovely enough and a great option for the community, but not necessarily something to travel or come all the way out for. The ingredients tastes fresh, but the dishes felt like there were assembled and not brought together to create something new. I was left wanting sauces, spreads, dips; anything to add interest and have them calling it a Laura’s signature.
