On this Sunday we looked at our leftovers and wasn’t compelled to reheat any of it, so went out to grab something fresh and easy instead. I had a gift card from Peaked Pies, located in our Burnaby Heights neighbourhood, so decided to take advantage of the savings.
They are an Australian bakery opened early, offering breakfast themed pies, heavy dinner appropriate pies, as well as sweet and savoury options. They even have kangaroo meat pies, given their Australian background.
Their all-wood setting with local beer and cider options makes them a great space to grab a quick meal and drink at.
All your options are presented and listed behind their front counter glass showcase. We would grab the following to go, to enjoy in front of our TV at home.
We went with the Traditional Aussie with ultra lean ground beef, gravy, and onion. Given how one tonal this read and the anticipated need for freshness, we got it “peaked”, topped with a large scoop of mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and gravy on the side to self pour. Our only regret was not getting our second chosen pie peaked as well.
Their brown baked, crispy crust was savoury and flaky, the beef a simple saucy mix that flooded. The fresh peas and mashed was needed to round it out and add some depth of flavour, as well as texture. The gravy is what offered the most salt and flavour, bringing it all together, we would save some for the other items below.
The Steak, Bacon, and Cheese pie had thick cuts of beef that added a different chew compared to the above. The pronounced flavour of the salted bacon was present, but not its texture; and I was missing the cheese completely. I would have liked more herbal seasoning in this, something to add interest to the flatter and saltier pie. Once again having it peaked with peas, potato, and gravy of its own would have remedied my concerns.
Their Sausage Roll also caught my eye, so I got one of those. I was expecting the frozen pigs in a blanket kind, but instead got something a lot fresher and of a better quality. Although sadly it lacked flavour outside of the mild sausage, and could have used some thyme or rosemary for character development. A dip, some cheese or a marinara rolled in with the pastry and pork would have been exciting. Luckily, we have the excess gravy above to dip into.
And in the dessert showcase the Lamington drew us in. A square block of a cake with a unique enough name to have me inquiring about it with the clerk. This is a traditional Australian cake.Â
The sponginess of a soft vanilla cake at its centre, surrounded by a layer of molten chocolate cake and brownie combined, then coated in a thin layer of sweetened and dried coconut shreds for creaminess and a change in texture. This was incredibly moist and made for a satisfying end to our indulgent meal.
In closing, a great stop for something quick and easy in our neighbourhood.
