Ube Items at Doe Coffee

Four unbelievably ube-ful items from Doe Coffee

We were in the Hastings Sunrise area and Monkey Joyce is always on the look out for new cafes to visit, especially as she isn’t in this area often. She did a quick online search and saw that Doe had a new spring drink worth coming in for.

They are noticeable from the road with their red awning and their doe logo, that corresponds to their name.

I have visited once before so knew their croissants are worth trying, especially after seeing that they had one ube one left in their all glass showcase. They make everything in house and as a result are able to get pretty creative. This season it is a collection of ube treats in a bold, eye catching purple; and I had to get them all.

Their new spring drink is the ube-matcha bliss latte. A three tiered beverage with ube, cream milk, and matcha. Joyce has dairy allergies so ordered it with oak milk, only to realize that the ube layer includes condense milk. Which meant that after a sip this became my drink by default.

You stir up to drink, combining the three individual colours into a dusty purple-grey. Less appealing, but still tasty. It had a more pronounced ube flavour than matcha, no complaints though, it was a nice dessert-like drink and I don’t often indulge in such.

The ube croissant was marked with a dollop of cream cheese frosting and a couple of dried ube crisps for garnish. It was a handsome, baked dark brown croissant. Flaky to the touch and chewy with a doughy pull.

Stuffed full of a chunky, just as dark purple, ube paste. Plenty to go around and enough to glob out after a bite. This was a wonderful treat that completely hits the mark for those who love croissants and ube.

The cream cheese cupcake was a swirl of pale yellow and dark purple. Still ube forward, but cut with the density of a salted cream cheese. It reminded me of a baked cheese cake, but with a cakey sponge. Not too sweet, making it a great accompaniment for any of their cafe coffees and teas.

Much like the cupcake, the ube loaf is not overly sugary and works well with milder drinks. The texture is like banana bread with crispier crust and chewy centre. Famialr and filling as a grab and go snack.

In short, four great treats for any ube fans. I can recommend a visit to Doe.
