I have 4.5 more classes to go in my counselling program and as I am preparing to graduate, those in my cohort, that started before me, are now finishing.
So in order to celebrate their achievements and mark the end of our journey together, I have decided to bring food to class to share, enjoy, and make memories around.
Today this had me ordering from the international Korean fast food chain, bb.q Chicken.
And right now they have a promotion offering customers a chance to win a trip to Korea. This is advertised as the biggest contest in their history: the l bb.q Adventure – Wings to Korea campaign.
There will be four winners announced, and each is entitled to a plus one. That is 4 lucky winners with a plus +1 guest each, meaning bb.q is sending a total of 8 people to Korea. The trip includes round trip flights, hotel accommodations, all meals, a guided tour of Seoul, and an exclusive visit to bb.q Chicken University, plus tickets to a global bb.q event hosted by their head office.
To win, all you have to do is order their chicken. Either order in person or online to be entered. If dining in or taking out, scan any of the QR codes present on individual tables or on posters hung, at any of their locations. This process will require you to submit your receipt. Once again it must include a chicken menu item.
The easier option is to order online via the bb.q website. Just order any chicken menu item during the campaign period and you will be automatically entered. That is what we had today for delivery. Worth mentioning is that the prices on their website are cheaper than through food delivery apps, where their own staff delivers them.
For those interested in participating, the contest runs from Monday, June 16th to Sunday, July 6th, 2025. The 4 winners will be announced on Monday, July 7th, with the trip being shortly after from Tuesday, July 29 to Sunday, August 3, 2025. So be sure you can take the time away before you commit.
As for today’s chicken meal, I ordered a collection of hand held items that would require no cutlery or plates, so that no one had to wash dishes. I also took into consideration student and faculty’s dietary restrictions. There was one person who was gluten-free, but said they can remove the fried skin. Another person didn’t like the texture of dark meat or bones, so I went with some boneless options. A handful of students liked their flavours spicy, one couldn’t take any heat. And our instructor was not an adventurous diner, and a vegetarian. The latter was was especially challenging to accommodate as we were ordering from a chicken place. They also didn’t have too many “safe” vegetable options outside of the sides.
The following is what I ordered for the vegetarian. Sweet Potato Cheese Balls and Chocolate Cheese Balls for the vegetarian. The former was a cherry pinky-purple hue with a nice mochi-like chew. Sweet and cheesy, it was a nice treat to sink your teeth into.
The chocolate ones served as a dessert with the same mochi texture and salted cheese, but with the overarching flavour of chocolate.
I also got a side of Corn Salad for our unadventurous vegetarian. This one she could have all to herself, as something savoury. It was pretty tame, mostly corn and small bits of vegetable, which she preferred.
Gangnam Style Wings for the gluten-free who liked things spicy. Crunchy wings dressed with heat, garlic, and a mild soy. At a level one, this was fairly spicy with a throat pricking tingle.
A Mix Box of two Boneless Chicken options for those who don’t like bones. A Creamy Jalapeño for the girl who likes it spicy and doesn’t care about the format of the chicken. And Cheesling because it is my favourite flavour.
Both were so heavily coated in sauce and powder that the crispiness of the batter was fleeting. Still tasty, but you know it could have been better fresh. The need to travel and transport did not help.
This was basically dark meat without the bones. Not my favourite, because I like the cartilage and being able to pick around the bones, where all the flavour is. I did get this from the chicken below.
A full order of their Golden Fried Chicken to play it safe, for those who don’t like it spicy, and for the guy who asked if I could just get Churches Chicken instead. Extra crispy regular chicken with chunks of textured batter and juicy meat underneath it all.
For all the chicken orders you have the option of having pickled radish on the side. I opted in, as I like them as a side to help cleanse the palate of punchier flavours.
In short, this was a great way to come together. My cohort appreciated the gesture and we all walked away happy, with the food and time spent together. Bonus, I might get a chance to win a trip to Korea for my efforts!
