Vancouver’s summer heat is in full affect and a great way to cool down is with a sweet frozen treat. However, if you are looking for something a little bit healthier than your ice cream and gelato options, Krave Culture in North Vancouver has a solution for you.
This is Edgemont Village’s home made, scratch made, organic yogurt shop. Serving up their own proprietary yogurt flavours in both fresh and frozen, coupled with a plethora of topping and combo options. I was honestly impressed by how creative they got. This is not just any random flavour in a cup, but the opportunity to enjoy yogurt all throughout the day from breakfast to lunch, as a snack and of course, for dessert.
For those unfamiliar, they are best known for their frozen yogurt twists. Two unique flavours of frozen yogurt intertwined and served in either a cup or a cone. They are picturesque towering well above any double or triple scoop.
However, the hitch here is that you cannot pick and choose your two flavors, they are preset. Available the likes of tart vanilla and chocolate paired together, mango and raspberry, strawberry and bubblegum, and passion fruit and raspberry. As it was our first time here, we had to go with a couple of these, opting for the first two.
Despite the sheer size and amount of yogurt, it eats deceptively light. It does not sit heavy like full cream in ice cream does. And not only that it is low in lactose, for those with that intolerance. Plus because it is yogurt it is full of probiotics, which is good for your gut health.
For those who are looking for a lot more pageantry with their yogurt, you can get it as a sundae with seasonal rotating flavors. Today we saw unicorn yogurt cups decked out in pastel coloured marshmallows, rainbow strips of candy, and sprinkles. They also have a parfait that is topped with tapioca pearls, as their take on bubbletea.
And speaking with the owners, they plan to come out with a lot more unique offerings to satisfy their littlest clientele. Fun fact they also own the daycare next-door so find themselves with the best opportunity to run flavour and marketing ideas across an honest demographic. For instance, superhero themed yogurt sundaes are in the works as a wanted request. This, along side hand held breakfast options to help capture the early morning crowd as well.
They have curated their menu so that there is plenty of reasons to visit, and not just for extreme heat. They serve their fresh yogurt as is with a wide selection of fruit, nuts, and seeds that you can top with. These make for a great midday snack or even a late breakfast as you can layer on filling protein.
I was most interested in their savoury yogurt line and took the owners suggestion by ordering the Mediterranean cup. This is their plain yogurt topped with a selection of seasoning, dressings, and toppings that mimic a Greek salad. Cucumber, tomato, olives, olive oil, sunflower, seeds, and feta cheese. It comes with a couple of pita crisps to dip into, but truthfully, not enough to enjoy the entire fulsome serving. The chips make it a fuller meal offering a wondrous crunch to a flavour reminiscent of tzatziki. Without the chips it did not satisfy the same, so I went out and got myself a bag. This makes for a tasty snack, as a guilt-free indulgence. If they were closer to my home and/or my workplace, I would definitely be indulging more often.
And on our way out we also grabbed a jar of their flavoured fresh yogurt. We sampled the assortment and went with the blackberry, as the one we like the best. Mango came in a close second. The refrigerated showcase is a help yourself affair available in two different jar sizes. Some are a plain yogurt with fruity syrup, others have toppings that you scoop up and mix it in.
In conclusion, I loved how they make yogurt hip and fun, breaking the stereotype of this healthy snack that your parents would give you in place of candy or ice cream. This one is definitely worth travelling to.
