Los Cuervos Taqueria & Cantina

I cannot tell you the number of times I have driven past this Mexican restaurant, and have never ventured in. Their “Aaay Chaparrita” is certainly striking enough to call attention to their corner location. However, today is the day.

The restaurant is two buildings in one. I am not sure which came first, but each half has its own style between hardwood floors with modern furnishings and a tiled mosaic bar with flooring to match.

We started with a couple of their cocktails, interested in trying their more festive sounding specialities like their Guava-jalapeño Margaritas De La Casa, served on the rocks with your choice between tequila reposado or agave. Or upgrade it to a smokey mezcal for $2 more.

The Mangonada is a frozen slush cocktail with tequila reposado, mango puree, fresh lime juice, agave, chamoy (mexican spicy sauce), and tajin. This was an even blend of sweet, salty, and spicy. There were enough savoury notes to find it complimentary to the meal ahead.

For food we started with the Ceviche Flight. Three different dips to have with their house made tortilla chips. Prawn aguachile, ceviche del día, and guacamole. The latter most was not a ceviche, but honestly my favourite of the three for how it easily scooped and coated the chip.

The other two were fairly runny, and could have used a draining before serving. The green shrimp mix was the sweetest, and I liked how the red fish one had apples as a fun twist.

As for something more fulsome, the Whaco Taco is a must. Double-decker tortilla with birria, melted cheese, pickled red onions, and guacamole. Served with a beef consommé on the side as a dip. This was two tacos in one, to be able to fit more toppings and have more crunch from the toasted shell per bite. Messy in a good way, this is one of those meals that you can’t put down once you pick it up.

My guest can’t have dairy so went with the Nopal with grilled cactus over a mix of beans, peppers, red onion, and corn. Topped with avocado sauce and cilantro, she easily opted out of no feta and like what she got.

Her second taco was the Camarón which is battered prawns, guacamole, pico de gallo, and a pasilla-tamarind sauce; all on a flour tortilla. The more zestier and meatier of the two with a generous amount of shrimp.

We also tried one of their tostadas, which is like a taco, but the tortilla is fried crispy and the dish is served opened face. You then choose your desired protein between chicken, pork, beef, or mushroom. Here, we went with the Pastor which is charbroiled pork in a pineapple and achiote adobo with guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, chipotle mayo, and cilantro. She enjoyed the crunch of the different format.

I too went for a different format with their fried burrito. A 12″ flour tortilla filled with the protein of your choice, cheese, black beans, and rice. Then rolled up and topped with pico de gallo and sour cream. It read like a chimichanga and for that I was excited, as I don’t know where else to find one in the city, and I love them.

This too I had as a pastor with charbroiled pork in pineapple and achiote adobo. I loved the flavour combination, but did not notice a texture from the would-be frying. I liked the guac and chips on the side, but overall could have used more toppings that were needed to add freshness to this assembly.

Overall, I really enjoyed everything we had and I think I have found my new go to for Mexican cuisine within Vancouver.
