OEB Breakfast Co., West Vancouver

If you love breakfast and are a fiend for brunch, you have probably already lined up and tried OEB; known for their quality farm fresh eggs. There are several locations around the Lower Mainland, each with its own character. And on this day, we travelled to West Vancouver to dine at their newest location, and we came hungry.

Their menu is massive, the longest listing of all things brekkie arranged in categories like Breakfast poutines, Bennys, and Scram-blettes. It is honestly hard to narrow your options down, let alone decide what to order, so it is best to bring a friend or two along to be able to share several plates, like Diana for @foodologyca fame and I did.

We began with classic morning beverages. Diana went for her coffee black, and I had my juices spiked. I cannot turn down a good flight, especially if they are mimosas made with premium fruit juices. Prosecco with either, Grapefruit, Mango, Orange, or Pineapple. Get your pick me up, vitamin C, and hair of the dog all in one.

Potatoes are a natural at breakfast so it makes sense that the classic poutine would be made AM ready with a bevy of toppings and a cracked egg or two. Except replace gravy with a just as heavy and extra creamy hollandaise. This is the Get Shorty Rib Poutine with Poached eggs, duck fat herbed potatoes, cheese curds, Philly style beef short rib, bell peppers, red onions, wild and cultivated mushrooms, and a brown butter hollandaise. This is the type of dish you order the day after a long night. Although if it weren’t for the crispy potato wedges, it would read more like a hash. Greasy and rich, it satisfies the soul with a Mexican vibe, thanks to the peppers and pulled pork that had me thinking of a fajita.

Diana had to order her favourite dish. I can’t imagine how many visits it took, to try majority of the menu, to be able to declare a favourite that she orders each time she visits. The Croque Madame with two sunny side up eggs, rosemary ham, sharp cheddar, truffles, brown butter hollandaise, Spanish manchego, and black truffle carpaccio. All between two slices of a potato sour dough rye soaked in short rib fat. With my first taste I could see why this is her favourite, she has great taste. This has everything: salty meat, creamy sauces, and the extra decadence of truffles. Plus, plenty of textures to cut through to keep your taste buds and mouth happy. All I would suggest is giving it a few splashes of Frank’s red hot, hot sauce to help add some acid, balancing out all the richness with some refreshing tang.

I prefer my brunch a little more on the lighter side, so was very happy with the Holy Crab Benny with wild blue crab, fresh dill, and Dijon mustard on a butter croissant with brown butter hollandaise. This too came with their duck fat fried herbed potatoes. The crab meat was the star, you could taste the sweetness of it, despite it being drowned in hollandaise. In hindsight, I wished we ordered something that didn’t have hollandaise on in, which in writing this, I realized has made its way into each of our dishes. Guess that is enough reason to revisit any one of their locations to continue working my way through their entire menu. Over 45 dishes, not including sides and the add ons and variations you could have.

In closing, for a delicious classic breakfast with options and a focus on quality ingredients, OEB is your go-to. And now with a new location in West Vancouver to better suit the community.
