It was a beautiful sunny day in mid October. A rarity and gift we capitalized with a visit to Steveston for a walk and sit on a sun soaked patio. If you are like us, you often pass by it, seeing others on the deck, but never though to visit yourself. Today we became those people. Sitting and taking advantage of Happy hour drink specials as the world walked by.
Of all the patios Sockeye City Grill’s is the most central, adjacent to the popular Steveston Pier for prime people watching.
Their happy hour food specials run from 3-6pm daily and their drink extends from 3pm to close. They boast $5 drinks: house wines in red or white, a house lager, Caesar and/or a Screwdriver. You can also get any classic high ball with your choice of liquor paired with juice or soda. We had 3 rounds casually, taking advantage of our prime deck position. Pedestrians at the forefront, the docked boats and the blue sparkling waters in the distance.
The drinks were not the best, but you got what you paid for. Round one was the house lager and a white.
Round two was a Whisky and ginger ale high ball that was watered down and further diluted by the quick to melt ice.
Plus a Caesar that was more tomato juice that vodka. I got the savoury and none of the boozy punch. There is an option to make it a double, but I was determined to maximize on our timing and stick to the $5 happy hour pricing.
Round three was another whisky and ginger ale and a mimosa with sparkling and orange juice.
We eventually got peckish so continued looking to their happy hour menu for some food specials. Apprehensive of the food, as both of us have never visited, and neither of us has heard much press over the place. So we played it safe with a burger and fries order.
$20 for a beer and a burger. You get your choice of patty between beef, chicken, salmon, halibut, or cod. Seeing as we were by the water a fish burger felt appropriate. Between the two white fish options we went for the cod, seeing as it is fattier and would be nice sandwiched between two buns with fresh lettuce, tomato, and onions.
There was plenty creamy and tangy sauce to flavour our fish patty. The red onion is ideal in balancing any of the grease and adding some nice acidity to the mix. We both did not see any difference from our fish filet here than that of any competing fish and chips place in the area. Except there was no wait and the seating is better at Sockeye City. This was better than we thought and we would return for more food with a view because of it.
Originally we thought this one of those places you only go for the patio or the view, so were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant was pretty good and we got a mild tan in the process. Nothing disappointed (as our expectations were set lower) and we found we had a great time on the pier. Will be looking forward to repeating this next year.
