The Victor Hour

After seeing videos and photos of this “adult happy meal” online, I knew I wanted to try if, for the toy alone. I am a grown adult with no children, so such a novelty appeals to me.

This is part of The Victor’s happy hour, fondly and cleverly named “The Victor Hour”. Running from 5-7pm, and only available for bar and lounge seating. The latter means eating at your knees or side by side dinning with your guest at a high top. The great part is the timing, capturing the after work crowd, this makes for a great dinner option.

The feature on this condense menu is the “After Office Adult Happy Hour Meal”. A drink, burger, fries, and dessert for a deal at $39, for the entire combo. This is centred around the King River Wagyu Burger, which has a meaty chunk of a patty. And since they grind their own beef you can choose you desired temperature of it. We went for a lovely medium for a nice pinky and soft centre. This is topped with caramelized onions and aged cheddar for a juicy burger with the right about of grease and gristle. I just needed some acid to help break the richness down. Here, I looked to the side sauces provided, toggling between the ketchup and black truffle aioli. Both also went well with the triple cooked fries. This was basically half a russet potato’s worth, cut thick for a soft and chewy centre, under the crisp of the triple fry that coated it.

You also get a dessert with this in their baked apple pie. This was like the gourmet version of a grocery store strudel. Flaky crust, a centre of gummy cinnamon coated apple chunks, and a topping of chunked sugar. This was familiar, homey, and comforting and I enjoyed it.

Although the best part of this adult happy meal is the drink, which isn’t normally the case for other and kids happy meals. For drink you get a Goose Tiny Tini, served in a branded Grey Goose glass. This was a miniature, half the size martini of grey goose, dry vermouth, and lemon peel. This was a refreshing number where the citrus complimented the food and the flavour was clean enough to not distract from it.

However, my favourite part and why I wanted this in the first place was the toy. A plastic keychain white goose with orange beak and feet. He was darling and definitely representative of the grey goose martini.

We also tried a couple of their other martinis listed on the back side of their happy menu. Although at $16 a glass, this didn’t seem like much of a deal.

The Nitro Espresso Martini was grey goose, kahlua, cloud house coffee rum, and espresso. A bold mid-day pick me up that was more coffee than cocktail.

In the opposite direction was the clarified Litchi-tini that was dillon’s vodka, mei, kuei lu chiew, lychee liqueur, and lemon. This was crushable, easy, and smooth drinking. It left you enjoying the natural sweetness and floral notes of its name-sake exotic fruit.

There were also a handful of cold and hot appetizers you can order a la carte from the happy hour menu. We went with their Shrimp Tempura, which is unlike the Japanese sushi shop kind. This was small whole shrimp, coated in an airy and bubbly batter, and dressed in a spicy creamy ponzu sauce. The latter wasn’t actually spicy, but sweet and furthered sweetened by the natural flavour of the shrimp. I did like the side of tempura-ed stem. Not sure what vegetable this was from, but I liked how it was slightly bitter, contrasting the seafood well.

Other happy hour appetizers to consider includes sushi rolls, steak tartare, wagyu croquettes, hamachi, and chicken karaage; however we were full and sincerely passed on any of the above. But admittedly the complimentary onion bread with salted butter is one of my favourites from the restaurant, and you don’t even have to order it.

Overall, this was a fun set and the reason that I chose this for our dinner destination today. So clearly their marketing works.
