Today I was at the beach for a picnic that doubled as a candle making workshop. This is a new way to enjoy the peaceful outdoors, hosted by local Vancouver-based creative brand focused on curated candle experiences: Boutiqaz.
Its founder and our host today was Nona. She walked us through the entire process while we grazed on charcuterie boards and sipped on imported wine.
The setting was special, but the activity was made challenging with the presence of wasps looking for a bite. They scared the guests who flinced with worry. I, however, was more preoccupied by the uneven grown. Despite the woven blankets and throw pillows for us to perch on, I found the extended sitting position uncomfortable.
Everything was pre-set and ready for guests to simply sit and enjoy. Nona walked us through two candle making activities. The first, a poured candle where we were able to choose our own scents. Mixing and matching, or just defaulting to one of her signature scents to utilize as our own.
The process went from sticking on the warning label to adhering the wick. Ending with the pouring the scent and wax into a ceramic tumbler and allowing it to cool.
While this was happening we began our second candle related activity. This was decorating the top of a pre-poured candle with wax. Wax churned and poured into a piping bag to be squeezed out like frosting on a cake. However, with the outdoor conditions and temperatures quickly cooling the wax, this became an impossible task and was quickly kiboshed.
We were the first workshop, acting as Guinea pigs for the concept and our feedback was gathered to be used to improve on the next one. So what you read here, might not be what you actually get.
This luxury candle-making picnic workshop is now being offered throughout summer. Each session promises a cozy, aesthetic experience by the water, where a small group of people will be pouring their own custom-scented candle and decorating a mini candles with toppings at a beautifully styled luxury picnic setup.
