Alan Walker, Vancouver 2024

A good friend has been asking me to go clubbing with him for years now, and I have never taken him up on the offer, until tonight.

After last Friday’s flop of a boys night out, we decided to try our luck again at the Alan Walker concert. I did not know of his work coming in and had to Google it. To be honest when told his biggest hit was “Faded“ I was thinking of a completely different song, when I agreed to go.

This music really isn’t my scene, nor does the drugs associated with such music really do anything for my system. I always say that I am an upper, so there is nothing else that can bring me higher. In fact, taking such drugs actually brings me down, so I would stick with liquor for the night.

We headed over to a friend’s house to pregame, grabbing a box of Polar Ice coolers in their summer berry and orange creamsicle flavours. We also had a couple of shots by them, flavoured in the same. These we took on the way to the club. Each at 30% ABV plus all the sugar needed to hide that fact. Admittedly this was rough.

Apparently such dance concerts start later in the evening, so we didn’t walk out of the house until midnight. We then took a detour and stopped at Parq Hotel’s D6 to meet up a friend. I didn’t realize that this bar turned into a nightclub after hours with a live DJ and gogo dancers.

Here, we would grab a couple of gin and tonics and take another shot, this time tequila. I joked that I would enjoy the music more here, than at the concert, and it is free with no cover charge. A great beat to dance to with a Latino flare. We also played around of pool, utilizing the lounge’s table, available for any one to use.

When time we were finally walked to the venue at 1am. The tickets are $90 per person. They are not cheap, but I guess if you are a fan of the DJ, a worthwhile investment. Tickets were sold out online, but available at the door for $140.

We originally thought the venue was the old night club “Fabric”? I am not sure, as they change names so frequently, and I have been around long enough to know the old ones and forget the new. However, the actual location was the old Harbour Convention Centre. Besides the age of the space, it offered plenty of room to sprawl out and dance within. However, there were parts of the arena, sectioned off by security. This included the second floor and the escalators that we tried to ascend in order to get a better vantage point of the stage.

The conference hall already has its own kitchen and bar, so I guests were able to purchase food along side mixed drinks here. I was double fisting a tequila soda and some vodka cranberry until a girl ran into me and knocked a full cup out of my hands. There is an apology, but no offer to replace it.

We eventually found ourselves at the left side of the stage, with a profile look of our celebrity DJ. Although aside from the strobing lights and the scrolling visuals, there isn’t not much to focus at on stage. So although we tried to get as close as possible, there is really no point. My partner and I eventually hung back and just enjoyed the music. A little buzzed, and a little high.

I had a good time, but wish I knew what songs to be excited for, I did not even recognize “Faded”. But there were two songs that was accompanied by confetti dropping from the ceiling, so I am assuming those were significant hits.

When the concert ended, the ugly lights came on and it was time to exit. There was only one set of doors to do so from, so we along with everyone else found ourselves pushing through.

Eventually we got out and decided to head back to Parq Casino for some late night gambling. This was just enough time to allow traffic to subside and to be able to grab a cab back home to Burnaby.

Overall a fun night of new experiences; however, not my scene, nor my music.
