Croissants are having their time in the Vancouver food scene lime light right now. There are so many options for these flaky and buttery crescents popping up, and more and more visual interpretations of them coming to social media in a frenzy.

So when you are done with the croissant shaped liked cubes, onigiri, and even carrots; and are looking for a classically done pastry, you can look to Angus T. They have two locations and we were at the Yaletown one today.

They are buzzing on the weekends, a warm space on this rainy day. You enter their all brick facade and are greeted by a fulsome showcase of their signature pastry.

At 11am there were already three rows of flavoured sweet croissants sold out.

Made in house they are all golden brown and perfectly topped by their given flavour profile. Hazelnut coffee, blue berry, and dark chocolate raspberry, to name a few. Each with a tuft of flavoured cream and the corresponding fruit to crown and mark it. You can’t help but choose with your eyes.

We got a box of six, all sweet, all delicious and a gateway for me wanting to return to try their savoury options as well.

The Earl grey lavender had a single gold flake that balanced on the tip of the its top. The flaky crisp of the pastry did well to contrast the fragrant chilled tea flavoured cream. Each lush bite ends in a light floral note.

The Lemon curd was like eating a lemon meringue pie, but in a croissant round with its flaky crust. Reminiscent of my childhood and the one I liked the most with tart lemon gel and a sweet topping.

The Pistachio & raspberry was paired together, but separated by a layer of pastry. Two different flavours and textures that I didn’t find necessarily harmonized, but did grow on me. The raspberry was more syrupy like store bought jam, and the pistachio a whipped spread with a faint nutty taste.

The Black sesame was dipped in frosting before it got a sprinkle of black sesame seeds dusted in icing sugar on top. Hidden within plenty of heavily roasted black sesame cream. There is no missing the flavour here, stuffed so full that upon the first bite it all squirted out. And the bites with the icing sugar added additional sweetness.

Their Double baked almond was an extra crispy croissant engulfed with toasted almond sliced and powdered sugar. Non-stop crunch and a satisfying chew each bite that you can’t put down. I recommend and would go back for this again.

And to change things up a little we tried their cinnamon bun. Not sweet and decadent as I know them to be, more like a muffin and on the drier side. You need the side of foamy cream cheese spread that it comes with for taste and sweetness.

As a whole, I would recommend eating anything you get from Angus T on the same day. Best fresh, and I could see things getting dry a day after. We waited five hours before we got to ours, and I could tell they would be better straight from behind the glass or from off of the cooling rack.
