Oakberry Açai

What is Oakberry?

Think an icecream sundae to help beat the heat, but instead of dairy you have an açai softserve. And instead of candied and chocolate toppings you have the healthier alternatives of dried fruit and nuts. And the result, is sure to be the next trendy food item in Vancouver.

The brand has already seen much success in the States, so it is nice to have them on Vancouver soil now, after setting up shop in Toronto and Calgary prior. The Kitsalano location I visited was the first to Vancouver, with another popping up soon by West Broadway.

For those unfamiliar with the super fruit, açai is a berry from the Euterpe palm, a native tree to the Amazon rainforest. Açaí pulp is a natural antioxidant, rich in minerals like Potassium, Calcium, and Vitamin E. And is healthy in fatty acids like Omega 6 and 9, and proteins.

This is where Oakberry comes in. Harnessing the power of the berries straight from Brazil to Canada to be featured it in their açaí bowls, served in cups. This is their answer to the healthy fast food snack game, being a great source of energy.

Oakberry’s açaí is 100% natural. Their recipe contains no food colorings, artificial preservatives, or guarana syrup. This ties in with their goal of preserving as much benefits of the fruit as possible throughout its production process.

Smoothies or bowls, you have your options laid out across from you. The difference between the two is how filling you want it and if you want to simply suck through a straw, or do you want to dig in with a spoon and have something to crunch through. After trying both, I prefer the bowl as the more filling option with more customization.

The base of this treat is the same for both, starting with a swirl of their açaí. And to it you can add toppings grouped into 3 categories; either crunchy, creamy, or nuts and seeds.

For a smoothie they advise up to three the likes of granola and cacao nibs for crunch. Or maybe chia pudding, honey, peanut butter or almond butter for a creamy texture and some whey or vegan protein to make it a more filling smoothie. And from nuts and seeds some chia seeds, peanuts or a peanut butter crumb.

For bowls you can have an unlimited number of toppings and the possibility of fruits like banana slices, strawberry chunks, whole blueberry, and dried goji berry. The other three categories are the same, but also includes coconut, cashews, almonds, and Nido which is a dry whole milk.

However you do it, this is a great one of a kind treat that tastes good and will leave you feeling good. While being a sure fire way to help keep you cool this summer. Definitely worth checking out.
