Hazukido

Today we were at the newer, trendy croissant spot and bakery. Located in Yaletown, they are known for their decorative desserts and variations on the buttery and flakey pastry.

You order at the counter and seat yourself. The space functions as a regular cafe, despite how dressed up the staff are, dawning a full chef uniform including white pleated cap to match the all white assemble. This definitely adds a level of prestige to the place and their goods.

All the available flavours of their specialty croissant are kept behind glass. Rows of slanted shelves labelled for easy ordering. The collection includes sweet and savoury options. The following is what we had, available in a box of three.

For savoury the Truffle crab was a nice one. Not so much truffle, but you got the sweetness of the crab and a certain smokiness to to elevated the buttery croissant base.

The Spicy roe gave you a bit of heat. It was a nice whisper to better highlight the fishy flavour of the roe. I too got a certain level of smokiness with this flavour.

Whereas the previous two savoury options had their namesake flavour embedded into the dough itself, the Salted egg yolk had its promised flavour as a filling at its centre. However, there was not enough of it and the flavour was not as forward as I had hoped. Luckily, I actually do like croissants plain, so the lack of filling from tip to tip didn’t bother me much.

As for the sweet ones we tried, all the flavours came as toppings, added more for decoration that taste. Whereas I wanted more of it in the middle. the Fresh Strawberry custard was one of the more visually pleasing croissants. Delicate and pretty, it also ate as advertised.

The Taro pudding was empty at the centre and had the promise of taro and pudding as toppings. Great flavours and a nice contrast together, but the croissant felt unnecessary here.

And my favourite of the 6 we tried was definitely the Durian. Once again, flavour only pipped out as a ribbon of cream on top, and there was not enough of it to truly satisfy. Sadly, this was a tease as the flavour was so pronounced and the cream simply delicious.

For drinks we had a couple of their milky options. The Assam black Milk tea was the more caffeinated of the two. Whereas the Rose latte was more light and sweet.

And speaking of sweet, as an even more indulgent way to enjoy their croissants, you can have it as the feature with their take on a sundae.

With a few flavours available we went for the Salted Caramel that had a salted caramel ice cream, lotus cookie, and caramel drizzle. It is exactly as you expect it to be and a different way to cool down

For something more chocolatey there is also the Hazelnut ice cream croissant with vanilla, ice cream, and chocolate Rocher coated croissant.

In short, Hazukido is a fun spot for a sweet bite, and they also do high tea towers that are great for sharing with a friend.
